Last Thursday, we had the first critique for cover group one with the editors.
The feature story was about mortgage crisis. It was an old topic, but what designers need to do is to dress old topic with new appearance.
It's impossible to come up with brand new idea every time, some issues are repetitive in nature. Readers already have stereotype. Stereotype is both good and bad. Good, is because, designers have a general idea for which direction to go and have a set boundary. Bad, is that how to make something old look new but still the readers will be able to recognize it without having to think too hard.
Advices offered including: be creative in detail, or do something different only with a small portion of the design. This critique came in right time with the spring preview vox design.
Before I start designing class, I often confused it with drawing class. I did have an art training how can I do design? Later, I came to realize, design is not all about art, or we can say only a small portion is regarding art. Of course, pretty design attracts eyes, but good design is not merely for eyes. It's more of idea and individual style. A good designs stay in readers' minds after even just a glance of your design, pretty designs get the compliment "it's pretty" but are forgotten the moment readers take their eyes off.
I really like your Spring Preview design Chen! You did a good job of thinking outside the box. I like your comment about design not being merely for the eyes and how it's more about the idea and individual style. I think that has a lot of truth to it. I'm excited to see more of your designs next week!
